The Barrio de Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter directly alongside the Alcázar and Cathedral, is the most central and atmospheric neighbourhood and puts everything within walking distance. El Arenal, between Santa Cruz and the river, contains the bullring and is lively at night with a good mix of accommodation styles. Triana, across the Guadalquivir on the west bank, is less touristy than the historic centre, considerably better value, and gives a much more local feel: it is well connected by bridge and only 15 minutes on foot from the cathedral. La Macarena, in the north of the old city, is bohemian, authentic, and interesting, though the walk to the main sights is a little longer. Sevilla is almost completely flat, which makes it an excellent city on foot and by bicycle: distances between sights are surprisingly small. The city is extremely hot in July and August (often above 40C), and spring and autumn are the best times to stay. Easter week (Semana Santa) and the April Feria are the two unmissable events but accommodation prices spike sharply and everything books out weeks in advance.
